What Is It About Bookkeepers And Their Work?

Posted by Online Marketer under General - No Comments

I know about trade secrets but accountants ?take the buscuit? as my friend in Forres, Scotland would say. You see, I meet all kinds and sorts of business people and they ask for help with search engine optimization (SEO).

I am not one of your High Street agencies that charge a blanket fee for everything and do not disclose what they do for you in the fear that some methods are so simple the client may make a decision to do them DIY and cut them out. I like to tell people what we are doing and teach them how to do it as well. They understand it better and can judge their results better. The whole philosophy of my business is that you know your own business best (If I knew more than you, I?d probably be your biggest competitor!) but since I?m not, my services are designed to be part by me and part by you, using my expert instructions. This naturally involves the business-owner coming up with a certain to-do list.

Briefly, for search engine optimization we look at things like (among other things):

?Keywords
?Link popularity
?Competition
As part of my link building strategies I am an avid fan of articles. These serve a few purposes some of which are:

1.You get to demonstrate your knowledge upfront. Unless you are selling to your mother and a few people in your backyard, the average prospect does not know you from a can of paint! So it is imperative that they get an idea of your expertise. You already are an expert, that?s why your business has survived offline for 20-odd years! Simply show it to the world.

2.As a direct-sales fan, I like articles because they give you the added advantage of selling your business while you sleep, to people that are directly interested in your chosen topic. There is no better prospecting method than that! Cost-wise anyway.

3.Google loves people like this! You see Google want to give information from legit people that will benefit Google?s customers. They want more of this. There is also some sort of mental trigger associated to Google Page 1 no. 1. People assume you must be worth your salt, if they see your name at that address; G1 P1. No that?s not some mis-spelt Glasgow post code but Google Page 1 Position 1 for your keyword.

4.I have seen countless people that get their business on the web and totally forget the usual business fundamentals, like the old ?feed the market what they are hungry for? or the sensible ?make a presentation, get some interest and make a call to action?. Instead they turn into the even older ?once you build it they will come? mentality. I may forgive a few chancers that start a business on the net from scratch but the entrepreneur that?s been in business on the High Street for 18years should surely know better! You see whether you are online or offline never forget who your customer is and who you are talking to, your audience. Feed them what they want, something useful and something that will get your name in their minds and hopefully get you some sales while you are at it. Use your articles to communicate useful information not just a mere ?I?m just happy to be here? attitude or the much much worse ?I am rich you are not and therefore stupid? attitude. Use your articles wisely and attract people to your business in an above board and respectful kinda way. Despite all kinds of gizmos and i-this and i-that instruments, research has shown that people are even busier that ever before in the history of mankind ! So, please respect that 3 minute timeslot they afford you.

Now, back to the book-keepers . It first happened almost two years ago now, I sat across from a very well known book-keeper and we were talking about getting articles out and enhancing his expertise and knowledge to his market online. He sat there and nodded like the Churchill bulldog and looked like he understood the reasons and what he would get from it. Now, flip that picture in your mind like they do in those old movies and you now see me sitting in the same position a whole six (6!) months later asking why I had not received anything yet! You see I understand busy, but he had some of this info already on his brochures and had assistants upon assistants that could churn a dozen of these out everyday! No excuse in my mind.

A while later I got another tax accountant and? you guessed it, same story! I wont bore you with the details here but you get the picture.

Just this morning I got an email in my mailbox from a tax return specialists, no joke people, but the heading was ?WHAT I GAVE YOU LAST WEEK WAS ENOUGH !!!? It came with capitals and exclamation points no less. I wont get into what is good online etiquette or not but? really? What did they give me you ask? They gave me a list of their services such as VAT returns and company formations and all the other boring stuff that made me major in Corporate Finance (Stocks and Bonds) and not Financial Accounting (Bean Counting) in university at CMU.

You see, people have seen your brochure, they know what you sell but all they see is really one of many middle-aged men (probably balding, no offense to baldies out there, I happen to be one and proud of it!) that probably had a hand in the credit-crunch and is now desperate to make something back from THEM. The extra step required to beat everybody else is a reasonable carpet bombing of articles to your market (OR primetime advertising at the FA Cup Final or the Superbowl if you have a spare

Establishing Trust With A Front Page Web Video

Posted by Online Marketer under General - No Comments

Putting a web video on page one of your web site, is not about information, it is not about product presentation, it is about trust establishment. As this article will explain, giving surfers a chance to see you, the owner, face to face in a web video, will immediately begin to establish trust in you, and facilitate their decision to want to do business with you

Trust is defined in the social sciences as having faith in others, believing in them. It may be shocking to know that having trust in another person is not the same as believing that person is ethical or law abiding. However, the degree to which one person trusts another is a reflection of belief in the other person’s honesty, fairness and benevolence. Important for establishing initial trust in business is that fact that a failure in trust is more easily forgiven if it is due to t a failure in competence rather than a lack of benevolence or honesty. As a result, sometimes a business providing, at least temporarily, inferior services may fare better with their customers than a company providing superior services, if people feel the first company is honest and means well.

The phenomenon of trust is summed up in the following definition. It is described as a “heuristic decision rule, allowing the human to deal with complexities that would require unrealistic effort in rational reasoning. Lets break this definition down. Heuristic processes are trial and error approaches to problem solving which begin with the most accessible solution, and go on to another solution, only if the first solution doesn’t solve the problem. What this means in terms of business is that if a customer finds himself interacting with a business owner that he intrinsically wishes to trust, because the owner appears benevolent, good natured and well meaning. Then the customer will prefer to trust the owner and do business rather than get involved into complex rational thought about what might go wrong in the business relationship.

Now getting back to the main theme of the article. What does putting a video on page one of the web site have to do with trust?. And here’s the answer. When a surfer goes onto a new web site, and thinks about doing business with someone he’s never met, he can rapidly be won over by a short online video of the owner talking with him. If he likes the look and personality of the owner than he will immediately wish to trust him and do business, because that will be the easiest solution for him to take.

And this realization leaves us with one more important take away lesson. A front page video needn’t trouble itself with a description of company services or products. It just has to provide a reason for the surfer to trust the owner. A short 40 second passionate description, by the owner saying that he established the family potato chip business 30 years ago because he wanted to provide people with a crispy chip that wouldn’t lose its favor in the package, will win trust right away.

The Truth About Duplicate Content

Posted by Online Marketer under General - No Comments

This article is about a very common piece of misinformation, that one can often encounter in online marketing forums. Part of the blame for this misinformation falls to article spinning programs and the way they are being advertised.

The rumor I am talking about is usually referred to as the Google duplicate-content-penalty. Apparently, Google has some kind of an issue with copies of the same content when it finds them spread across several websites or on several pages of a single website. As the rumor goals, if the Google crawlers find this duplicate-content this will trigger some kind of a penalty. On a Side-Note, while I have seen dozens of mentions of the duplicate-content-penalty, I have yet to encounter a description of exact details, explaining what this penalty is and who it is that gets punished.

Don’t worry though, this is all just a baseless rumour. And it can be easily disproved. Let?s take a look at some examples:

Press Releases

Every time the big story breaks and a press release is issued, that story gets picked up by countless news sites. Such stories and press releases are often also picked up by bloggers all across the Internet. Usually, the original text of the press release is republished word by word by most of the sites. Despite all this, news sites and blogs continue existing, unpunished by Google.

Song Lyrics

Have you ever seen how many websites there are, where people can look up lyrics to their favourite songs? And can you imagine how often pieces of famous song-texts are quoted and reproduced on blogs and in discussion forums on the topic of music? In every instance, the song-texts are unchanged and identical, in other words: duplicates. And once again, it’s clear to see that no penalty applies to sites like lyrics databases.

Content Going Viral

Time and time again, some piece of content (perhaps a video or a joke) catches on with a wide audience and start spreading across the web like wildfire. When something goes viral like this, it gets republished and copied hundreds and thousands of times on many different sites. Again, a clear example of duplicate content and no punishment in sight.

Despite this evidence, the myths about the duplicate content penalty are alive and well, and it might be due to a mis-interpretation of the Google search results.

The Misinterpretation

If you search for a piece of content that has numerous duplicates, Google will only display a few of those in the standard search results. You can click the button in the search results to see all of the duplicates listed. The reason for the omission of some duplicates from the search results is that Google strives to display diverse and relevant results. Displaying dozens or hundreds of duplicate entries would not be very useful for the person doing the search. However, the sites that are not being listed are still indexed by Google and links from those sites still ?count?, so there is no actual penalty in play.

The problem is that it’s in the interest of many producers of article spinning tools to keep the duplicate content myth alive. Fear sells and if you believe that you must spin and rewrite any content you want to distribute or suffer punishment from the big G, you are more likely to make a purchase.

Article spinning and tools and programs that help you do it does have it’s purposes and it can be very beneficial for online marketing. But a mythical penalty from Google has nothing to do with it.
